A Promise Can Become Dishonest Without Being Broken.

When capacity changes, honoring an old promise may mean renegotiating it before denial makes somebody else pay.

A promise can become a lie without a single word changing.

That sounds like the sort of sentence a person invents five minutes before disappointing somebody. I know. We have all watched responsibility put on a philosophy hat and try to escape through the side door. Suddenly the promise was merely an intention, the commitment was made by an earlier version of the self and the person left carrying the consequences is invited to admire the emotional sophistication of the exit.
