Everybody Gets to Step Away from My Illness Except Me.
The people who love me deserve relief from the work of illness; the part nobody says aloud is that their necessary rest can feel like rejection when I cannot leave the body creating the work.
There is no checkout desk inside a body.
Nobody slides a key across the counter and tells me my shift is over. I cannot leave Parkinson’s with the night manager, step into the parking lot and become somebody whose plans are not subject to neurological review. Wherever I go, the body comes too, dragging its paperwork, its uncertainty and its talent for turning an ordinary day into a meeting nobody scheduled.
