When illness changes what I can do for other people, reassurance cannot fully replace the dignity of still having something to contribute.

There is a particular kind of panic hidden inside the sentence, “Don’t worry. We’ve got it.”

Usually, the sentence is kind. Somebody sees that I am tired, slow, overloaded or simply taking too long and removes the task from my hands. The problem gets solved. The room relaxes. Everyone can keep moving.
