I Have Become Easier to Help Than to Know.

Chronic illness can make a relationship excellent at managing needs while quietly forgetting to remain curious about the person who has them.

Ask what I need and the answers can become surprisingly efficient: more time, a little patience, room to change the plan, maybe help with something my body has turned into a small municipal project. Ask who I am today and the room gets quieter.

That is one of the stranger consequences of living with a difficult body. The people around me can become very good at helping me without necessarily knowing me any better. They learn the logistics. They anticipate the obstacles. They remember what drains me, what takes longer and which plans require an exit strategy. Love becomes competent.
