I Have Won Arguments That Cost More Than Losing Would Have.
Being correct can become a way to avoid being vulnerable, and victory is expensive when the relationship has to pay for it.
Every argument has at least two scoreboards. One keeps track of the facts. The other keeps track of what it cost to prove them.
I have always been more comfortable watching the first one. Facts can be organized. Evidence can be tested. Contradictions can be exposed, and a weak argument can be taken apart with the satisfying precision of removing the wrong screw from a machine. The second scoreboard is messier. It counts silence, distance, humiliation and the moment another person decides that bringing me the truth is no longer worth what happens next.
