There is a very respectable way to lie to someone you love: call it protection.
I did not tell you because I did not want to worry you. It sounds generous. Mature, even. I absorbed the fear so you could keep moving through your day untouched by it. In this version of the story, silence is not avoidance. It is a small act of nobility performed by somebody thoughtful enough to suffer quietly.
